From June 11th to 13th, the International Symposium on Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Fisheries Resources in Northeast Asia was held at Dalian Ocean University. Li Zhijun, Deputy Secretary of the University Party Committee, and Liu Wenhe, Vice President, attended the symposium, with Li Zhijun delivering the opening address. Approximately 130 representatives from over 20 institutions participated, including the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Far Eastern State Technical Fisheries University of Russia, the Secretariat of the Greater Tumen Initiative (GTI), supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Department of Commerce of Liaoning Province, the Department of Commerce of Jilin Province, Dalian Municipal Bureau of Commerce, Hainan University, the Second and Third Institutes of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, Xiamen University, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian Maritime University, Zhejiang Ocean University, and Dalian Shipping College etc.

The symposium set two parallel sub-forums. The China-Russia Forum on Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Fisheries Resources held in-depth discussions on topics including population dynamics, stock assessment and cross-border conservation technologies, covering cutting-edge research outcomes in marine biology, marine chemistry, physical oceanography and marine ecology etc. The 6th GTI NEA Marine Cooperation Sub-Committee Meeting Supported by UNDP focused on land-sea intermodal transport, marine industry chain upgrading and relevant international cooperation projects, further deepening the consensus on regional marine governance and sustainable development collaboration.

This international symposium was co-organized by the International Exchange and Cooperation Office, Science and Technology Office, the College of Marine Science and Environment of our university, and the Liaoning Provincial Graduate Innovation and Academic Exchange Center for Marine and Fisheries. The event fully showcased the university’s latest research progress in marine and fisheries fields, effectively enhanced the influence of relevant disciplines, and laid a solid foundation for cross-institutional cooperation. Taking this symposium as an opportunity, the university will further integrate high-quality domestic and international resources, leverage the platform support of the Liaoning Provincial Ocean and Polar Science Data Center and the Dalian “Belt and Road” Joint Laboratory for Fisheries Resource Conservation and Sustainable Utilization, and continuously inject scientific and technological momentum into the development of Liaoning’s modern industrial system.
