Dalian Ocean University was founded in 1952, formerly known as Northeastern Fishery Technology School.

It was renamed as Dalian Fisheries Academy in 1958 and  upgraded to Dalian Fisheries University in 1978.

In 2010, it took on its current name, Dalian Ocean University, with the approval of the Ministry of Education.
